Grey Block (or widely known as Besser Block) is a concrete block in natural grey colour only.
There are many shapes and sizes that do particular jobs within the wall or building. It is primarily used by the construction trade for masonry walls, retaining walls ands multi storey buildings. It is a high volume, high use product.
It has a very high fire rating as it is non combustible, and acoustic rating because of its density, and can be rendered or painted with a variety textures.
It requires a concrete mortar joint between courses, and must be laid on an engineered concrete slab/footing using starter bars to meet any applicable Building Codes.
The blocks are hollow, and can be core filled with concrete or aggregates to increase strength and stability, which are subject to engineering certification.
It is not restricted to trade buyers only, as it can also be used by DIY home owners for residential weekend projects also.
These blocks primarily used in residential projects and are designed for wall heights up to 1.0 metre high (approx) depending on the product type.
They are used to build a wall in a “dry stack” process which does not require a concrete mortar joint or a concrete footing. Each block generally has a small lip at the rear which locks each block into the course, and this laying procedure is repeated in the next course up as you build the wall
Because of their ease to use, they are most popular with DIYers as no brick or block layer is required for the project, and most walls are under 1.0 metre in height and no concrete mixing etc.
These blocks are hollow also, and can be core filled to add strength.
They are available in different sizes and colours, and there is a wide range of textured finishes from smooth to split face.
